Chandragupta I

- He began the Gupta era (319–320 AD) and was the first Gupta to issue gold coins, of the king-and-queen type advertising the Lichchhavi marriage.

Samudragupta
- Samudragupta (335–380 AD), the “Napoleon of India” (V. A. Smith).
- He annexed the Gangetic valley by force (dig-vijaya); defeated and released twelve southern kings (grahanamoksha, dharma-vijaya); and made border and forest states subordinate.
- Tribute came from the Kushans, Shakas and Meghavarna of Sri Lanka, who asked leave to build a monastery at Bodh Gaya.
- Titles: Kaviraja (king of poets), Param Bhagavat (Vaishnava), Ashvamedhaparakrama, Sarva-raj-ochchheta (uprooter of all kings), and Lichchhavi Dauhitra (grandson of the Lichchhavis).
- The Prayaga Prashasti on the Allahabad pillar, a Sanskrit eulogy in Brahmi by Harishena (sandhivigrahika, kumaramatya and mahadandanayaka); the Eran inscription gives Sarvarajochchheta and his wife Datta Devi.

Chandragupta II
- Chandragupta II, Vikramaditya and Sakari (enemy of the Shakas), overthrew the Shakas of western India, taking the empire to the Arabian Sea, with Ujjain as second capital; he married Kubernaga, a Naga.
- His daughter Prabhavatigupta married the Vakataka Rudrasena II, securing the Deccan flank.
- He issued the first Gupta silver coins (rupaka); gold coins were dinaras. PYQ UPSC 1996
- The Mehrauli iron pillar (near the Qutub Minar), of rust-resistant iron, records victory over the Vangas and Vahlikas (Balkh) and is attributed to him.

Kumaragupta I
- Kumaragupta I (415–455 AD), Mahendraditya, worshipped Kartikeya, the war god, and founded Nalanda.
- The Damodarpur copper plate shows North Bengal in the empire; the Mandsaur inscription records silk weavers migrating and forming a guild. The Hunas threatened late in his reign.
