William Hawkins (1608-1611 A.D.) was the first English ambassador sent by the East India Company to Jahangir’s court, and the first Englishman to appear at the Mughal court as a representative of the Company. Emperor Jahangir granted him a mansab of 400. He conferred on Hawkins the title of ‘English Khan’ and arranged his marriage with an Armenian woman.
