Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (a) 1 Nov. 1858

Explanation

After the suppression of the Revolt of 1857, on 1 November, 1858, Queen Victoria declared that Indian administration would be taken under the control of the British Crown. After this proclamation, Company rule in India ended and India was brought directly under the British Crown. The post of Secretary of State for India (also called India Secretary) was created, and to assist him a 15-member Council of India was established. The then Governor-General, Lord Canning, was made the first Viceroy of India.
