Correct answer: (a) Zamindars
Explanation
In 1793, Lord Cornwallis introduced the Permanent Settlement system of land revenue. It was also known by different names such as Istemrari, Jagirdari, Malguzari and Biswedari, etc. This system was implemented in Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Under it, about 19% of the total area of British India was covered. Under this arrangement, a new class of zamindars was declared as landowners. They had to pay 10/11 of the land revenue to the Company and could keep 1/11 for their services.
