Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (d) Statement I is correct, but Statement II is incorrect
Explanation
Statement I is correct; II is wrong.
The Zamindari Association, also called the Landholders' Society, was founded in Calcutta in 1838 by Dwarkanath Tagore, Prasanna Kumar Tagore and others. It was one of the first political associations in India. It was formed to protect the interests of the zamindars, especially the Permanent Settlement, by petitions and legal means; it did not speak for the common people or the peasants.
It later merged with the Bengal British India Society into the British Indian Association (1851).
