Blue vitriol is chemically:
- ASodium sulfate
- BNickel sulfate
- CCopper sulfate
- DIron sulfate
- ENone of the above/More than one of the above
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (c) Copper sulfate
Explanation
Blue vitriol is copper(II) sulphate pentahydrate, CuSO₄·5H₂O, a bright blue crystalline salt. Heating it drives off the water of crystallisation and leaves white anhydrous CuSO₄, which turns blue again with water.
It is used as a fungicide (in Bordeaux mixture), in electroplating and in dyeing. Green vitriol is iron(II) sulphate and white vitriol is zinc sulphate.
