Which of the following laboratories claimed a historic nuclear fusion breakthrough in December 2022?
- ALos Alamos National Laboratory
- BLawrence Livermore National Laboratory
- COak Ridge National Laboratory
- DMore than one of the above
- ENone of the above
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (b) Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Explanation
In December 2022, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA) achieved the first net energy gain from a nuclear fusion reaction.
It used inertial confinement fusion, firing a 192-beam laser at a hydrogen capsule to trigger fusion.
This differs from magnetic-confinement projects like ITER and China's EAST tokamak.
