47th B.P.S.C. (Pre) 2005

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (d) Moon

Explanation

High ocean tides occur due to the resultant force of the Sun’s and Moon’s gravitational attraction and two forces produced on the Earth—centripetal force and centrifugal force. Ocean tides are mainly the result of the Moon’s gravitational pull. The Moon is much closer to the Earth than the Sun. Due to its attraction, sea water rises and forms tides. The gravitational pull of the Sun is not as effective. Therefore, the tides caused by the Sun do not rise as much as those caused by the Moon. It is notable that the tide-generating power of the Moon is about 2.17 times that of the Sun.
