Explanation

Article 124 of the Constitution provides for the composition of the Supreme Court and states that it shall consist of a Chief Justice and 7 other judges, and that Parliament may, from time to time, determine the number of judges by law. To fix the number of judges, Parliament enacted the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, and fixed the number of judges at 10 (excluding the Chief Justice). By amending this Act, the number of judges has been increased from time to time. Under the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Act, 2019, the present maximum sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 33 (excluding the Chief Justice).
