According to the Census, 2001, Bihar was the third most populous state in India. As per the Census 2011 as well, Bihar holds the third position. In this order, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra rank first and second respectively. On the basis of the final data of the Census, 2011, the five most populous states are as follows—Uttar Pradesh (19,98,12,341), Maharashtra (11,23,74,333), Bihar (10,40,99,452), West Bengal (9,12,76,115) and Andhra Pradesh (8,45,80,777).
