Correct answer: (c) Almeida

Explanation

Vasco da Gama was the first Portuguese to reach India. He arrived at the port of Calicut on the western coast of India on 20 May, 1498. By reaching here, he discovered a new sea route to India. The then ruler of Calicut, the Zamorin (Zamorin was the hereditary title of the rulers of Calicut), welcomed Vasco da Gama. Portuguese traders established their trading factories at the ports of Calicut, Goa, Daman, Diu and Hooghly in India. In 1505, Francisco de Almeida came to India as the first Portuguese Viceroy and Governor. In the context of commercial interests, to establish supremacy in the Indian Ocean, Almeida propounded the ‘Blue Water Policy’, i.e., the policy of dominance over the seas.
