Correct answer: (b) Peel Commission

Explanation

After the suppression of the Revolt of 1857, the British government appointed the Peel Commission for the reorganization of the Indian army. It recommended adopting the principle of keeping different castes and communities mixed within the regiments. The number of European soldiers, which was 45,000 before 1857, was increased to 65,000, and the number of Indian soldiers was reduced from 238,000 to 140,000. In Bengal, the ratio of European soldiers to Indian soldiers was kept at 1:2, whereas in Madras and Bombay this ratio was kept at 1:3.
