Who hired the ship 'Komagata Maru' to go to Vancouver?
- AGurdit Singh
- BKartar Singh Sarabha
- CSohan Singh
- DBalwant Singh
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (a) Gurdit Singh
Explanation
Gurdit Singh, a Sikh businessman living in Singapore, hired the Japanese ship Komagata Maru in 1914 to carry 376 Indians, mostly Sikhs, from Hong Kong to Vancouver. They wanted to challenge Canada's continuous journey rule, which kept Asian immigrants out.
At Vancouver most of them were not allowed to land, and the ship had to return. At Budge Budge, near Calcutta, on 29 September 1914, police clashed with the passengers and many were killed. The incident angered Indians abroad and helped the Ghadar movement.
