Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (b) Clement Attlee

Explanation

Clement Attlee of the Labour Party was Prime Minister of Britain from 1945 to 1951, so India became independent under him. His government sent the Cabinet Mission (1946), announced in February 1947 that Britain would leave India, sent Lord Mountbatten as the last Viceroy and passed the Indian Independence Act.

Winston Churchill, Prime Minister during the Second World War, opposed Indian independence. Harold Macmillan was Prime Minister later (1957–1963).
