- DIndividual
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (c) Champaran
Explanation
The Champaran Movement (1917) was Gandhiji’s first Satyagraha movement in India, in which he used civil disobedience. This Satyagraha was started as a protest against the ‘Tinkathia system’ prevalent in Champaran (Bihar) in the early 19th century. After the Champaran Satyagraha, Gandhiji used Satyagraha in 1918 when he intervened in the dispute between the cotton mill owners and workers in Ahmedabad over the plague bonus. In the same year, 1918, Gandhiji started the Kheda Satyagraha in Gujarat because, despite crops being destroyed, the British government did not grant remission in land revenue. It may be noted that Gandhiji began the Rowlatt Satyagraha in 1919 in protest against the ‘Rowlatt Act’ passed by the British government.
